Active Living
Workshops are monthly events that provide education, screenings and an
opportunity to get active in the community. Coalition partners host
and support these activities in the community.
Key Issues for the
Coalition:
Community Resources are provided by the coalition through the website.
Workouts at area parks, updates on classes and places to go to get active
are updated regularly.
Walk-ability and Wellness is a major
focus of the coalition. The coalition along with the Walk Florida Resource
Center brought in walking expert Mark Fenton for an active living workshop
to demonstrate how accessibility and safety affect the health of our
community. The link above will help you access a public service
announcement that was created at the workshop. You will need a fast
connection to the internet and Windows Media Player to view it. What
can you do? Help make our community more walkable or bikable by going for
a walk with the
walkable community survey
today! Send your results to the Health Department (the address is on
the survey). We will share your input with coalition partners like the
Department of Transportation and the Sheriff's Office so that we can make
the healthy choice the easy choice in Collier County.
School Wellness Policy
The coalition was active in writing and
implementing the Collier County School District wellness policy.
This
Legislation pertaining to nutrition and physical education in
schools was implemented June 2006. Please access a draft of our
Wellness Policy
by using this link. The coalition commented on the
policy and asked that it add safe routes to school, staff wellness and
more physical activity requirements like the
model plan
has. This plan was accepted by the board at the March
board meeting without a prevision for safe routes to school or an increase
in physical activity requirements. Principals at each school will be in
charge of making sure the plan is carried out. The coalition is
involved because it believes like Commissioner Jim Horne that health is an
important part of learning:
A physically and mentally healthy child performs better in the classroom
and has a better ability to learn, Education Commissioner Jim Horne said.
It is necessary we promote a healthy lifestyle through parent, teacher
and community involvement, to the benefit of our students. We must
continue to make nutritional menu options and physical activity and
athletics a priority.
